What will you be studying? Courses include sculpting, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, installation art and integrated media. But hanging around with thousands of other artists will be just as important as your formal studies in helping you to refine and expand your own art!
Ontario First Nations Students Group
If you wish, you can get support, comradeship and encouragement from the Aboriginal Students Association (ASA) at OCAD. This group is specifically for students who identify as First Nations, Aboriginal, Indigenous, Native, Metis or Inuit. Non-aboriginal associate members are also welcome.ASA hosts video and film screenings and participates in community and cultural events. Group members sometimes work collaboratively to create art pieces for display. Whether they are from afar or Ontario, First Nations students have an outlet to discuss, discover and display the unique culture they share through ASA.
You should also know that OCAD is committed to increasing the participation of Ontario First Nations students and aboriginal students from across Canada.
Getting in
When you apply to OCAD, you will be evaluated on the basis of your portfolio. However, OCAD demands that students meet certain academic requirements to ensure their success. If you don’t meet the minimum requirements, you won’t receive a first-round portfolio interview.If you don’t have the marks, don’t despair. Keep working on developing a great portfolio. You might also consider taking a year or two in another art program with low or no minimum grade requirements so you can prove your ability to handle your courses.
Things to know about art study at OCAD
- As of 2008, OCAD has expanded to offer Masters level programs to students.
- Over 3000 full and part-time students attend OCAD.
- The student/faculty ratio is one of the reasons so many people want to engage in art study at OCAD. Here, class sizes are small with a student/faculty ratio of 16:1.
