Native American Art

Native American art is extremely varied in terms of themes, styles and forms. That makes sense when you consider the different tribes which have, and still do, inhabit the continent. Each tribe has it culture, myths and beliefs which are reflected in varying art forms.

Stars in the Sky

At one time the Native American tribes were described as being as numerous as the stars in the sky. Since then many tribes have combined as a matter of survival while others retain their unique identity to this day. In their art is found the tears, the laughter, the struggles and the determination to survive no matter what the Spirits presented as challenges.

It’s impossible to define Native American art as a single style or form. Native Americans to this day use materials in their environment to create art forms which reflect their unique tribal identity. For example, you can find totem pole carvings which carry on the oral tradition that has preserved tribal history. There are grass baskets and paintings which use naturally colored paints.

Native American art can be stone carvings, wood carvings, woven baskets, intricate jewelry, colorful clothing and headdress and many other art forms. But the tribal art does not just take ancient styles passed down through the centuries. The Native Americans have endured through many trials, because of their ability to adapt and absorb changes that occur.

When you shop for Native American art, you will find a wealth of artwork created by very modern men and women who try different mediums. For example, Native American paintings may tell a modern story but use the same earthy colors that reflect their union with nature. The paintings, and all the other styles of artwork, are done with a passion for ancient traditions and modern respect for an embattled earth.

Little Star

Art has always been used to communicate emotions and beliefs. A chiseled statue may be of a medicine man who can talk to the gods. A carved mask reflects the ones worn during important ceremonies where boys became hunters, the ill were cured or a marriage was completed.

You would expect Native American art to be very unique. The myths and varying cultures hold colorful stories, vivid imagery and an honest appreciation for nature. Think of the Blackfoot tribe myth which talks of the Sun rising from bed and his son Morning Star, or the Cheyenne myth which says the Grandmother Turtle carries the earth on her back.

Native American art cannot be defined with a few words. But whatever kind of Indian art you are interested in purchasing, it has been done. There are prints, paintings, weavings, wall hangings, jewelry, carvings and tile work.
