Hobbema Alberta: Tiny Home to Samson Cree Nation

Hobbema, Alberta may be small, but it’s home for more than 3000 members of the Samson Cree Nation. Samson 137 Reserve is close to the tiny hamlet of Hobbema in central Alberta.

Samson 137 Reserve is actually one of four reserves surrounding Hobbema. Unemployment in the region is high; there just isn’t much industry around Hobbema. But Samson’s financial future is beginning to look quite bright.

History in Hobbema

For 30 years, Samson has been fighting the Canadian Government for control of their own money. In 2006, the band made history when a court order gave them control of their federal government funding.

The move was historical because until that point, the Government of Canada managed the funds for First Nations—a situation other Canadians wouldn’t stand for in their own financial lives.

Wise investment

Samson now holds their money in a trust fund. In the very first year, that fund saw a rate of return of 12.85%. When the government controlled the money, the rate of return was much lower at 4.28%!

Samson Cree Nation has also partnered with two other First Nations—Ktunaxa Nation and Mnjikaning First Nation—to create an entertainment destination out of a place once filled with despair.

Saint Eugene’s Mission in British Columbia was Canada’s first residential school. Today, thanks in part to the Samson Cree Nation of Hobbema, tourists head to the Mission to relax, golf, be pampered and take in the excitement of the casino.
