More About Cal Arcand

Cal Arcand is from the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.

The images he paints come from the many experiences and opportunities he has had in learning about his First Nations heritage.

Cal started dancing pow-wow at the age of 10 years old in the fancy bustle style. A quick learner and natural showman, he began travelling and sharing his dancing style. He has performed for both First Nations and non-First Nations people across North America.

At the age of 17, Cal had the opportunity to perform with the National Aboriginal Arts Foundation. John Kim Bell, who produced the show, “In the Land of Spirits”, not only gave him the opportunity to travel to major cities in Canada, but also to meet and become a protégé of First Nations artist Dennis Morrison from the Ochapowace First Nation.

Today, Cal combines spirituality, symbolism and realism to portray a vivid picture of the culture of First Nations people across North America. His media of choice is to work with acrylics and oils on canvas. He currently works with young people to teach them a little of what he has learned and continues to be an ambassador for First Nations culture through the arts.
