Alberta First Nations Reserves and Bands
Alberta First Nations reserves are scattered from one end of the province to the other. In 2006, 188,365 Albertans reported themselves as being of Aboriginal heritage, meaning either of First Nations, Inuit or Metis descent. Less than half of these people live on Alberta first nations reserves.
Most of the reserves in Alberta came into existence in the late 1800s when the province’s Aboriginal peoples signed Treaties 6, 7 and 8. There are currently 46 distinct Alberta First Nations bands.

Plains Indians
Alberta First Nations are considered Plains Indians. These include:
- Anishinaabe
- Blackfoot
- Dene
- Nakoda
- Plains-Cree
- Tasttine
- Tsuu T’ina
The buffalo, or bison, was of great importance to these people. It’s meat was eaten and it’s skin was used for shelter and clothing. The traditional form of shelter was the tipi (teepee), made of buffalo hide stretched over wooden frames.
Alberta First Nations Art
Traditionally, the art of the Alberta First Nations people was used to decorate useful items.
Painting, carving, bead work and quill work are some of the art forms you’ll still find Alberta First Nations artists turning out today.
Plains Indian art often features images of war and of the traditional nomadic way of life of the Plains people. It is more realistic than the
Woodland style.
Often, the artist presents a rather romanticized portrayal of the subject.
Today, of course, Alberta First Nations artists readily mix styles and bring their own spin to the traditional Plains Indian art style.
