Bearclaw Gallery

Reportedly Canada’s very first art dealer specialising in First Nations art, Bearclaw Gallery in Edmonton is committed to showcasing the variety and creativity of Alberta First Nations artists, as well as other aboriginal artists.

The gallery is not devoted to one particular First Nations art style. Here you’ll see West Coast and Iroquois art, as well as that of Dene, Ojibway, Inuit, Cree and Metis artists. Some very big names have shown their work at Bearclaw Gallery, including Alex Janvier, Norval Morrisseau and Jane Ash Poitras.

Arts, crafts, paintings, prints and sculptures are sold through the gallery. You’ll also find unique art forms such as moose hair tufting and Inuit dolls.

Maligne Canyon Art Gallery

High in the mountain town of Jasper, Maligne Canyon Art Gallery showcases an enviable collection of First Nations and Inuit art. This is one of the province’s fine Inuit art galleries; the gallery reports that it houses millions of dollars worth of stone and ivory carvings! It also lays claim to the largest collection of Norval Morrisseau paintings in the world.

The pieces showcased at Maligne Canyon don’t fit every budget. Soapstone carvings priced in the five digits are the norm. But anyone is welcome to browse the gallery and view some of the finest First Nations art in existence.

At Maligne Canyon, you’ll find fine art by a variety of Alberta First Nations, Inuit and other aboriginal artists. There are pieces in Woodland, West Coast, Haida and other styles as well as many works by the First Nations Group of Seven.

This gallery also boasts a large sculpture collection by such artists as Christopher Pardell.

Northern Art Impressions Inc.

At gorgeous Lake Louise, Alberta, First Nations art can be found at the charming Northern Art Impressions gallery. Another of the province’s Inuit art galleries, Northern Art Impressions also showcases an unforgettable collection of Northwest Coast and Woodlands art.

This became one of Alberta’s Inuit art galleries when the owners spent time in the Arctic in the 1970s. Inuit sculptors such as Lucy Tasseor, Toona Iquliq and Kiawak Ashoona have all displayed pieces at the gallery.
